Second phase of Biswa Ijtema begins after Fajr prayers
Gazipur, 19 January: The second phase of the 53rd Biswa Ijtema, the second largest congregation of Muslims after Hajj, began on the bank of the Turag River at Tongi here after Fajr prayers on Friday.
The ijtema began with ‘a’m bayan’ (general sermons) by Bangladeshi Mawlana Mohammad Faruk.
Thousands of Muslims, including Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque, attended the Juma prayers conducted by Hafez Mohammad Jubayer, Imam of Kakrail Mosque.
Thousands of Muslim devotees from 16 districts of the country are taking part in the religious congregation. Some 3,908 devotees from 78 countries reached Ijtema ground.
Replying to a query from reporters, the Home Minister, prior to Juma prayers, said there are some differences at Nizamuddin markaz in India. But following the differences, no foreign devotee did return to home. Only Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, top scholar of Indian Tabligh Jamaat, and his two sons left Bangladesh.
Following the allegation of adulterated food supply by makeshift stalls at Ijtema ground, Gazipur deputy commissioner Dr Dewan Mohammad Humayun Kabir said with the help of BSTI, some 10 mobile courts are being conducted to ensure safe food among devotees.
The second phase of the Ijtema will end through ‘Akheri Munajat’ on 21 January (Sunday).
A seven-tier security measures have been taken to ensure security of the Muslim devotees.
Besides, special measures have been taken to facilitate the movement of the devotees.
Around 50 close circuit cameras have been installed in and around the venue to monitor the Ijtema ground and the adjoining areas.
The first phase of Biswa Ijtema was held at the same venue on 13-15 January.
The Biswa Ijtema is being arranged on the bank of the Turag River since 1967. It is being held in two phases since 2011 to ease the accommodation and transportation problem.
